about

“The Django scene needs its Miles Davis moment,” I said.

“Or its Albert Ayler moment,” Chris said. “Maybe Misha Mengelberg.”

That conversation was before the pandemic, and we were just two dudes shit-talking. But then Chris wrote and said he was working on some Django stuff, just him and some fingerpicks, and did I want to kick around some of those tunes with him? I said sure. We started getting together, sporadically, playing the songs, but not really. The pandemic started and we kept getting together. Then we got sort of serious about it, but not really; we were serious the way Carl Stalling was serious about scoring Looney Tunes cartoons, or the way a clown is serious about slipping and falling. We started setting up microphones and recording, and Chris brought some beer over from the brewery he works for, and in between tunes we talked about books and farts and politics and the Naugatuck River and what would have happened if Django had lived long enough to hear rock and free jazz. Most of what we recorded was just okay. A lot of it was too long. Is this okay now? Is this too long? Anyway, we recorded it, and await the slings and arrows from Django purists. But was Django a purist?
